human computer interaction

Unit 13  Sensational Computing

http://sigchi.org/cdg/cdg2.html#2_2_2

looks at the design of computer systems for all applications in which humans and
computers need to work together.

as computers become more a part of everyday life Human Computer Interaction is an increasingly important sucject.

User Interface -  display (monitor);   keyboard ; mouse; microphone; speakers;

"The Design of Everyday Things"  - Don Norman
Why does a door need instructions to say "push" or "pull" ? A well designed object should be self explanatory.

the digital divide - the information gap -  brought about because of the difference in economies and the differences in cultures
and language. The need for a better more useable interface  -    information mark up language - the simputer   simpler / open and cheap.

Sound interfaces - automatic speech recognition  - 2001 : A Space Odyssey  a supercomputer called HAL. HAL was made to understand human speech.

Sound interfaces - music / noise - alerts - warnings

handwriting recognition

tangible and gesture computing

everywhere computing - ubiquitous computing - research

Tolerance(a design principle): the ability of a UI to prevent errors if possible, or to make them easy to recover from, if not.

Feedback(a design principle):in the context of user interface design it means making it clear what action has been achieved through the use of the UI element.

Structure(a design principle):in the context of user interface design, it means that a user interface will be more usable if it is structured in way that is meaningful and useful to user.

Affordance(a design principle):in the context of user interface design means making it clear how a UI element should be used.
